The inventor of the Gantt Chart is Henry Lawrence Gantt. The chart helps to remove the hazards of overlapping multiple tasks of a business operation. Some of the components are the positive ideas he included in the chart, like motivational schemes, as well as the highlighting of the rewards owed to the workers who work dedicatedly.

Gantt was an engineer and a social scientist, and his career lead him to create the renowned chart, with its informative graphical illustrations that are used to plan, synchronize and to follow the specific events of a project.

Generally, in the chart, the horizontal axis denotes the complete time span, which is divided into smaller spans, while the vertical axis expresses the tasks of the project to be done in the particular time span.

You can draw horizontal bars with different lengths in relation to the sequences and time span. In the same way, vertical bars are drawn to denote the time you spend on the particular task of the project. At times, there might be an overlap in the bars. You can also include secondary bars (like darkened bars or arrowheads) to represent the completed event.

Generally, Gantt charts do not show the dependencies of the tasks. Since the 1980s, Gantt charts have found inclusion in computer applications. These days, they are a common feature in computer based applications like Excel. Gantt charts are of great help to professionals who need to manage company data and project information. To help ensure that progress is continually made in the management field, the Henry Lawrence Grant Medal is awarded to a true innovator every year.
